Sprengidagur, also known as "Fat Tuesday," is another Icelandic tradition that is part of the Shrovetide celebrations. Sprengidagur usually falls on the day before Ash Wednesday and is observed as a day of feasting before the beginning of Lent—a period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter.
The name "Sprengidagur" translates to "Bursting Day" in English, and it is associated with the idea of indulging in rich and fatty foods before the Lenten fasting begins. On this day, Icelanders traditionally consume a hearty meal featuring foods that are considered indulgent and filling. This might include dishes like salted lamb, pea soup, and a variety of sweet treats.
One popular tradition on Sprengidagur is to eat a particular type of Icelandic split pea soup, known as "þorramatur." This soup is often served with salted lamb, as well as other traditional foods like dried fish, liver sausage, and more.
