Health-Promoting Community 2023

Rangárþing eystra has been a part of the Health-Promoting Community project since June 2020. 

Health-Promoting Community is a comprehensive approach that the Directorate of Health works on in cooperation with municipalities, public institutions, non-governmental organisations, etc. The main goal of a Health-Promoting Community is to support communities in creating an environment and conditions that promote healthy lifestyles, health, and well-being of all residents. Health and well-being are paramount in all policy-making and actions in a Health-Promoting-Community. We work with the determinants of health and well-being, such as social, economic, and cultural conditions, and artificial and natural environments to create the most optimal conditions in life, play and work for people at all stages of life. 

A multidisciplinary steering committee of eight members was appointed right at the beginning and since then the committe has tried to meet around nine times a year. The meetings mostly involve analyzing the situation in the municipality by answering standard checklists from the Directorate of Health. Along with analyzing the situation, the steering group has helped planning Health Promotion Weeks, carried out various projects organized by ÍSÍ, and discussed what is possible to do immediately to make our society even better. We have also held lectures as well as surveys among residents about what could be done better in our municipality.

What lies ahead for the steering group in 2024 is the drafting of various policies for the municipality, such as public health, sports and leisure policies. Emphasis will also be placed in 2024 on "Well-being with mental health".
